I may sound naive here, but I've only seen it in pictures and on T.V. Yesterday was the first time I have ever eaten a kiwi.
Hold on, that's not what I had (who put that picture in there? lol!). But it looks a lot like that minus the feet, beak, and most of the head. I wonder if they eat kiwis in New Zealand hehhehe.
Below is what I actually ate as part of breakfast yesterday...the kiwifruit.
kiwi Actinidia chinensis, a photo by luc.viatour on Flickr.
My office mate bought it from Divisoria. First impression, it looks
fresh and juicy and I wasn't mistaken. First bite, it was sweet right
there at the green part but at the center part where you have the seeds,
it's a bit sour. I am not much a fan of sour foods but this one's got
just the right sourness, something I can easily tolerate. I actually
like the sweet-sour blend there.
Kiwifruit may be small but it packs in a lot of nutrients like Vitamin C and E, potassium, and lutein among others . What further got me interested was the long list of health benefits for certain conditions. And yes, hypertension is on the list. Yay! It is claimed to have blood-thinning properties similar to the effect of aspirin. That's beneficial for those with very thick, viscous blood, like me, I guess. It can also lower blood pressure because of the presence of lutein that is a powerful anti-oxidant. Of course, that probably needs further studies. So before we hypertensive people get too all excited and start gobbling this fruit in large quantities, remember that balance is still the key. After all, it is not the absolute cure for hypertension, but it sure is a wonderful addition to my fruit repertoire that includes my favorite melons and the all too familiar and abundant bananas.

I heart kiwifruit already. Just this morning, I had another one, courtesy again of my very generous office mate. But I'll have to buy my own next time.
You have a lot to thank your officemate for, I see. I'm a bit put off by how the kiwi fruit looks, I have to admit, that's why I was never brave enough to try one. When the next opportunity presents itself, ok, I'll go ahead and have a bite- if only for its nutritional value :)
ReplyDeleteIs it because it looks like the little bird? Once you take out the skin, it looks like a regular fruit :-) It's good! Do try it one time
ReplyDeleteI'm not a fan of sour fruits, but I'm now curious about Kiwifruit because of this entry. Haven't seen it in our local market. I'll definitely remember you when I get to see and try it. :-)
ReplyDeleteThey say it's a sour fruit but it has a sweet taste to it...or maybe it was already over ripe lol!
ReplyDelete*lol* I really thought you were talking about the bird XD
ReplyDeleteNot a very adventurous fruit eater, I'm afraid~
I tried a kiwi flavored tea though which tastes like any other tea~
How do you eat a kiwi fruit btw?
I tried this one. It was so delicious, but I preferred dragon fruit. lol
ReplyDeleteI'd like to try that one also...must be good if you prefer it over the kiwifruit
ReplyDeleteLol! I can't imagine myself eating such a cute bird and risk being bashed by animal rights activists.
ReplyDeleteAbout the fruit, you just simply peel off the thin, hairy skin with a good knife and cut the fruit any way you like. Hope you'll like it. It's actually refreshing.
LOL! But the first picture does look like a Kiwi.
ReplyDeleteThe first pic is indeed a kiwi (the bird) and the green one is the kiwi fruit
ReplyDeleteI haven't eaten a KIWI before, but I would love to try them out. They look like chicos. ehehehe
ReplyDeletei will take your advice and try kiwi fruit for my hypertension :) and yes i have eaten kiwi fruit before i love it :)
ReplyDeleteKiwi is very good. Here in Norway Kiwi is always and must to eat. Tasted good but sometimes sour.
ReplyDeleteHope to see you back: www.iconnectworld.com
It's kind of expensive...but a good way to control over eating kiwi hehehe
ReplyDeleteYes, hairy chicos that is :-)
ReplyDeleteI love kiwi too! There is also kiwi shake which tastes sweeter (but then syrup is added). Eating it plain is good enough to obtain the vitamins found in this wonder fruit!
ReplyDeletei crave for kiwi when i was pregnant they thought my little bean would resemble shrek or hulk, lol but fortunately he's as red as a tomato. :P
ReplyDeleteI love kiwi! A bit pricey but good enough once in a while.
ReplyDeleteI love kiwi fruits! :) We usually don't have them at home, but when I see food items with kiwi in restaurants, I'd often order them.. ^^
ReplyDeleteI am not sure if I eat Kiwi but sounds like a sweet and healthy fruit to munch :-)

I love kiwi, i started to eat when i was pregnant .. Medyo expensive lang hehe
ReplyDeleteOh, I looove kiwis! The fruit and not the bird. :)) I love to eat it with sweet cream. I also love having it in tarts with custards. Yum-yum!
ReplyDeleteI used to be very skeptical about Kiwi, I thought it may look pretty and inviting but I just have the small voice inside my head saying it's not really delicious. But when I tried a kiwi flavored muffin, I was instantly hooked! From then on, I tried kiwi flavored shakes, kiwi desserts and I'm loving it!
ReplyDeletesometimes it's a little sour, but it's really a super fruit 5x vitamin C than oranges...
ReplyDeleteI'm not really a fan of kiwi fruit.. but I think I should give it a try from time to time until the day I'll learn to love it. :)
ReplyDeleteKiwi is available in every supermarket here in Dubai. I love eating kiwi fruit and drinking kiwi juice. I prefer eating kiwi after it is being peeled, sliced and refrigerated in a bit. :)
ReplyDeleteI have known four types of kiwi:
1. kiwi fruit
2. kiwi bird
3. kiwi - people from New Zealand
4. kiwi shoe shine
LOL!
Kung may contest ng best comment, eto na ang winner hahaha! Alam ko rin yan 4 types ng kiwi lol! You just made my morning :-)
ReplyDeleteI think the bird is cute...just not for food lol!
ReplyDeleteI haven't tried kiwi pa but it sounds so good to me. I've heard a lot about kiwi and I'm sure that it is packed with some nutrients. Will check if it's available in Thailand. Thank u for sharing this, Sis
