When I was twenty, I thought forty was ancient already. Now that I have reached that age, honestly, I could say, it doesn't feel so old after all. Well, sure I've got a bad knee and I have probably gained some weight over the years, together with some wrinkles, blemishes, unflattering bulges and all sort of things we associate with ageing, plus of course this chronic hypertension that I am still battling, but hey, four decades? It's a milestone!
The thing is, I am still able to do most of the things I used to do when I was very much younger. In fact, I've done many things in the past couple of years that I have not done in my younger days. I've learned a bit of Taiji and would have gone to learning Wushu or Taekwondo if not for the injured knee. I'm not closing doors to other forms of martial arts though. Aikido perhaps? And let's not forget my love affair with running. I've ran in 5K and 10K events, and sometimes on a monthly basis. That is excluding my weekday and Sunday runs. Oh and yes, I finally learned the basics of swimming and would probably go for advance classes if time permits this summer. I'm still fearful of drowning, but more daring in trying not to drown, I guess hehehe.
At forty, I look forward to the next forty or so years, God willing. I look forward to more challenges to conquer, new things to learn or at least try, milestones to achieve as I strive to live a healthy lifestyle.
Fit at forty and beyond...that is my goal. After all, we are the stewards of our own bodies. We have received the gift of life, but we have to work at it for the long haul. It is a personal responsibility that each of us has to take seriously. Good health is something we have to work hard for every single day.
